As the name might suggest, Barfly is a little hole in the wall on St Laurent boulevard right in the middle of The Plateau.  The beer is cheap, and every night sees the place filled to the brim with locals, but the real secret is that this is one amazing place to catch local talent. Over the past decade, the stage at Barfly has been graced by most of the now well-known Montreal bands. In fact, in the local music scene, Barfly is seen as one of the places a young new band has to play in order to be legit. It's a tiny old wooden club with great sound and a discerning audience.  Not only is décor a festoon of Les Canadiens hockey memorabilia, but bands are not permitted to play (or even sound check) while the hockey games are playing—they take their hockey very seriously at Barfly. Sundays have a long standing tradition on the stage, where top quality neighbourhood musicians come by to sit in on Country and Bluegrass standards. Some of these players have been session musicians and professionals for well over twenty five years, and if you're into this type of music, a better time will be hard to find. The crowd will be mostly locals, it's not uncommon to even see a neighbourhood dog cruising through the bar, greeting the regulars. But as the dog can attest, this mostly English speaking crowd is friendly. If you are looking for a taste of the real indy Montreal rock scene, grab a beer, play a game or two of pool, and enjoy some up & coming bands at Barfly.
