Bourtzi Island Fortress

Address:

Nafplion,

NileGuide Expert tip:

Small boats just along the harbor leave regularly for the fortress for a price of 4 euros. Go before sunset for a beautiful view of Nafplio in gold.

Description:

"Bourtzi" is the Ottoman word for "tower," and this particular tower, romantic in its isolated point in the port of Nafplion, has been a characteristic landmark of the town since the middle ages when it was built by the Venetians in 1473. From then and now it's changed hands a number of times, most importantly from the Turks to the Greeks when they took part in the Siege of Nafplion during the War of Independence. It was used briefly as a safe haven for the executioner of the prisoners of the Palamidi Fortress, then a resort hotel in the early to mid 20th century. It's still able to be rented out for personal affairs like weddings or dinners, but more often is visited by tourists who arrive by boat from the harbor.
