NileGuide Expert tip:
After the meal, soothe your mouth (yes, the food is spicy), with the sweet pan (beetle nut leaf) kept at the counter. Believe me, you will need it.
Tucked away in an insignificant by-lane off Ashoka Road, the Andhra Pradesh Bhawan Canteen is one of the best places in town to experience mouth-watering Andhra cuisine. There are no alluring boards, instead, a no-nonsense, "Way to Canteen" sign that shows you the way. The décor is strictly functional. The seating, canteen-style, eight to a table. The food, heavenly. For Rs. 80, you get two dry vegetables, two-three types of lentil soups -dal, sambhar, rasam
, pickle, rice, roties/puries
(bread), pickles, yogurt and a sweet dish. The helpings are unlimited. You are expected to eat as much as you can. And speedily make way for the next batch.
