NileGuide Expert tip:
This latest Italian offering from Robert DeNiro and partners gets crowded on weekends...with good reason! Take a seat at the bar (you can dine there too!) and ask about the specials (recent offerings included a fabulous Italian wedding soup with crusty bread on the side).
Formerly home to Ago, this Tribeca space co-owned by Robert DeNiro now houses a very different Italian restaurant: Locanda Verde (the name means "green inn"). This bustling, comfortable neighborhood spot combines a fun, stylish scene with some seriously great cooking from star chef Andrew Carmellini (formerly of A Voce). During the day, leisurely diners can nurse a strong cappucino and enjoy delicious breakfast treats like a polenta waffle or zucchini frittata. In the evening, starters and small plates (perfect for sharing) include crunchy crostini topped with crowd-pleasing ingredients like sheep's milk ricotta or wild mushrooms, as well as antipasti ranging from lamb meatball sliders to rich roasted beets with gorgonzola and pistachio pesto. Delicious fresh pasta, main courses like stuffed mountain trout and fennel-glazed duck, and contorni (sides) like rustic potatoes with garlic and parmigganio-reggiano round out the dinner menu, while desserts with names like "La Fantasia di Cioccolata" (for two, of course) beckon at the end of the meal.
