Uruma City & Kitanagusuku Village

In terms of nightlife, Uruma City and Kitanagusuku Village are much more peaceful than Okinawa City to the west. However, historically the area brimmed with political intrigue. Home to two feuding Okinawan lords of the Ryukyu Kingdom era, Uruma City and Kitanagusuku Village contain Nakagusuku-jo and Katsuren-jo, the castle ruins of Lord Gosamaru and Lord Katsuren. Only the remains of the castles can be seen, but both sites command a lordly view and give visitors a good feel for traditional gusuku architecture. For those who wish to see how a prosperous farmer of the 18th Century lived, the Nakamura Family Residence displays a more peaceful side of life. Getting away from the city is as easy as taking a drive onto Kaichu-doro, "the Road through the Sea." 4.7 kilometers (3 miles) long, this inter-island bridge connects the Katsuren Peninsula to the Henza, Ikei and Miyagi Islands and has some spectacular views of the crystal blue ocean.
