The School House is in Orange, which is the gateway to the great red centre. Out this way it is very very dry. Although Orange is a major regional centre, it is no bigger than a decent sized town, with the people around these parts mostly unpretentious rural types. Certainly Orange is not thick with great restaurants, but The School House is an exception to that rule, with its kitchen considerably more ambitious than you would expect from its sleepy surrounds. Part of the attraction of the resturant is the School House itself – a century-old rammed-earth building overlooking a dam filled with ducks and geese, surrounded by the vine-covered, and gently rolling hills of a historic property. The establishment doubles as a cellar door for the Mayfield Vineyard, which produces some excellent wines.
