Just four hours' drive from Rio down the beautiful coastal road of the Costa Verde (Green Coast), Paraty – sometimes spelt Parati – is a perfectly preserved piece of colonial history. The entire historic centre of the town is a UNESCO historic Rio, and is awash with charming churches, whitewashed houses and cobbled streets that are washed with rainwater when tides are high. A beautiful destination in itself, Paraty is surrounded by paradise islands that can be reached by fishing boat, and isjust 20 minutes' bus ride from the gorgeous beach village of Trindade, popular with the backpacker set. There are countless guesthouses and restaurants in Paraty, with some good bargains to be had if you make your base outside the historic centre itself.
