The Wood Island Lighthouse in Biddeford, Maine, provides visitors with a beautiful scenic view of the Saco River and adjoining Saco Bay. This lighthouse, originally built in 1806, helped guide all manner of ships plying the busy seafaring trade in Portland and the Maine Beaches region. Thanks to The Friends of the Wood Island Lighthouse, visitors can get a taste of what life must have been like for the light keepers who kept the Wood Island's 45-foot granite structure burning brightly. A $10 donation to the Friends' restoration fund allows for a tour of the island and, possibly, a climb up the tower itself.
