As Maine's southernmost town, Kittery has had a long, productive association with the sea. It is perhaps best known for its co-claim to the Portsmouth Naval Yard, a designation it shares with the neighboring community of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. For kayakers, Kittery is also known for being home to Chauncey Creek, one of the best locations for kayaking in southern coastal Maine. Kayaks launch from Kittery's municipal boat launch, located beside the now closed Frisbee's Market at 88 Pepperrell Cove Road. Weaving around the pleasure craft bobbing gently in the harbor, kayakers soon enter the Piscataqua River, the main waterway in southern Maine and New Hampshire that enters into the Atlantic Ocean. Nearby, you'll enjoy the smooth, clay-colored shoreline and occasional beachfront homes while, off in the distance, there is the picturesque site of lighthouses on small islands. Take note, though: while you may be tempted to paddle out to these islands, the Piscataqua's aggressive currents will likely prevent you from doing so. Turning left, you'll enter Chauncey Creek, a wide body of water that is more river than creek. Along this route, be sure to notice and enjoy the majestic Cormorants, local seafaring birds, hunting fish; the shoreline crowded with lush trees and featuring fascinating exposed rock and soil combinations, and a basin with a swift moving current that propels you under a highway bridge.
