Description:

York is one of the most distinguished, legendary resort communities in southern Maine. Since the late 1800s, it has been the chosen summer retreat of the wealthy as evidenced by the stately homes situated along its gracious thoroughfares. In more recent years, those of more modest means have also discovered York. The town has welcomed them with a family-friendly entertainment district that includes restaurants, arcades and one of the best smooth sand beaches along the coast. For paddlers, York also offers much in the way of scenery and fun. Kayakers typically set off from York Harbor itself, which is located on Harris Island Road off of Route 103. Here you will find yourself weaving smoothly around pleasure craft and working lobster boats that call the harbor home. Enhancing the scenery are the stately mansions and summer homes along the upland shore. Eventually, you make your way along the shoreline with its lush sea grasses bowing in the stiff ocean breeze. Your route will take you along the wetlands with its flat, expansive beauty and mix of birds and other wildlife. Another route takes you toward the ocean but be careful. You can easily find yourself battling the current trying to make your way back to the safety of the harbor. For kayak rentals, check out Harbor Adventures (www.harboradventures.com) in York.
