NileGuide Expert tip:

Make reservations for dinner first and then enjoy a stroll a couple hours after the fires are lit when crowds start to die down. Be careful about attending on windy evenings since the smoke from the bonfires can be quite strong.

Description:

WaterFire is a local event that occurs periodically throughout the year. Waterfire is set up on the Providence River that runs through the middle of downtown Providence. Over 100 individual bonfires are set ablaze on stations in the center of the river. The fires begin around sunset and last about three hours.

This is a highly attended event and spectators tend to make a night of it by coupling dinner with a leisurely stroll along the riverbank. Authentic gondolas can be rented for a romantic float along the fire-lit river. The river walkway, bonfire lights, music and gondolas really add a romantic and somewhat Venetian feel to this picturesque city.

The event is free and a calendar of dates and activities can be found on the website. There are many private tented venues along the river that support the event and tickets can be purchased in advance from the website. There are food stations, outdoor bands and street performers along the river and on many sidestreets.
