NileGuide Expert tip:
Most tourists jump off the Santa Teresa bonde (tram) at Largo do Guimaraes, but staying on the Paulo Mattos line until the end of the route takes you to this pleasant square frequented more by locals than foreign visitors.
There's a village square-style feel to this quiet and picturesque square, making it hard to believe that the rush and crush of downtown Rio lies just minutes away. The square sits in front of a simple whitewashed church and is flanked by bars serving decent food, and on warm weekend evenings is packed with families enjoying an al-fresco drink and bite to eat from one of the food and drinks stands that crop up here when the sun goes down.
