Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
NileGuide Expert tip:
Guest houses close to the bus station are considerably cheaper than those in the historic center, and are just a few minutes' walk away. Less distance to drag your luggage, too.
Around four hours' by coach from Rio de Janeiro, the historic town of Paraty more than merits a visit. Lying on Rio de Janeiro's beautiful Costa Verde (Green Coast), the town is surrounded by beautiful islands, many of which can be visited by boat.
But it's the town itself that is the real draw for tourists - the entire historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is a perfectly preserved example of colonial architecture. Whiewashed houses and churches, cobbled streets and a wonderfully laid-back ambience make this a good place to come for a few days' rest and relaxation.
