The Salt Lake Valley's unsung rim

NileGuide Expert tip:

If planning a visit to the Oquirrh Mountains, consider stopping by the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine for a tour of the world's largest open-pit mines.

Description:

When people talk about the mountains of Salt Lake City, they almost always talk about the Wasatch Mountains. But if you look to the west, you can't help but admire the beauty of the Oquirrh Range. Though only about 1/5 the length of the Wasatch, these beautiful peaks nevertheless stretch approximately 30 miles southward from the southern shores of the Great Salt Lake. Because this range stands a fair distance from Salt Lake City, it offers a much wilder, less-traveled environment to explore. Take a hike to Flat Top Mountain; at 10,620 feet above sea level, this is the topmost point of the Oquirrhs.
