Schranne Market

Address:

Mirabellplatz
5020 Salzburg, Austria

Description:

Every Thursday morning from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., Salzburgers throng to the Schranne Market, the city's most popular open-air market. Held in front of St Andreas church in Mirabellplatz – across from Schloss Mirabell – the market spills over to surrounding streets. The market offers riches of fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers, colourful flowers and traditional seasonal floral arrangements, a wide range of meats, raw, smoked and cured, and likewise fish. There are artisanal cheeses, fresh bakery goods, pastas, home-made knödel and dumplings, wines, schnapps and juices and many regional speciality items.

There's more too. A stall might comprise a lone woman selling her own needle work in traditional patterns. There are vendors of woollen goods, wooden items, brushes and hats, clothing, bees wax products, Marmot oil and special creams and potions. It's a great venue for people watching as young and old do their weekly shopping. This is not to be missed if you're in Salzburg on a Thursday morning.
