Description:

While in San Jose, take a morning tour of Café Britt's beautiful coffee farm, and get more than just a taste of Costa Rica's original gourmet coffee. Just outside the city center in the hills of Heredia, Café Britt's headquarters is a sprawling, sustainable plantation that provides the unique climate and diverse landscapes that combine for growing perfect gourmet coffee. In a little under two hours, Cafe Britt's charismatic, multi-lingual tour guides create a memorable, engaging experience that is a souvenir in itself of Costa Rica. The tour begins outside in the nursery, among the trees, where coffee experts explain the growing cycles and bean selection, and pick some of the ripe little red berries on the branches. The guides are well-versed in their subject, and the animated presentations will engage even the novice coffee aficionado. The roastery is a real working factory where Café Britt is roasted and packaged; a substantial undertaking. Large rooms with twenty foot tall machines are filled with the aroma of beans in various stages. One of the highlights of this tour is an ensemble performance in a theater setting, during which costumed actors play out the history of coffee and its impressive role in Costa Rica's economic development; an education in coffee made more palatable by the opportunity to rest one's feet. The tours ends with a buffet lunch, where diners sit cafeteria style and may help themselves to plates full of local ingredients, and sip of the magic brown brew from the Don Prospero coffee bar. Exit is through the gift shop, where the best deals on Café Britt may be found, along with a bevy of souvenirs of Costa Rica (they will ship back home for you so you don't have to weigh down your luggage with several pounds of beans.) Duration: 1.5 hours Price:$20 Transportation available from most hotels in San Jose. Available: 9:30am and 11:00am year round. Also 3:00 pm Dec. 15 – April 30.
