Description:

The food at Lai Thai, is quite simply, as put by a diner I met there recently "like it is in Bangkok." The restaurant started as a small stall in BioBio, the capital's sprawling flea market, beside other stalls selling meat sandwiches and other Chilean specialties. The menu is small, with only about six items, and the ony drinks they sell are a couple of coconut-water canned refreshments. But this doesn't keep epeople from piling into the restaurant, both on the street side and the stuffy, inside meaty area where they also have a set of tables.

Three favorites are the chicken satay skewers, the shrimp in peanut coconut sauce, and the pad thai, which is the most frequently ordered item. The system works as follows: wait for a table, then order from the cashier, pay on the spot and then await your food, which you bring to your own table. When you are finished, bring up the plates to the cashier, and your table will quickly be taken by the next waiting diner.
