NileGuide Expert Says:

To get a view of some of the severe damage left in Santiago by the Feb. 27th earthquake, this Basilica is a good place to get an idea.

Address:

Calle Almte Barroso, 277
Santiago, Chile

NileGuide Expert tip:

Come in early afternoon for the best view up into the cupola.

Description:

While this Basilica, which sits on the corner of the streets Huerfanos and Almirante Barroso in Barrio Brasil was once splendid, it now sits in a terrible state of disrepair, thanks in part to the 1985 earthquake. This earthquake, which left the church unstable and held up by wooden buttresses was followed, twenty five years later by the February, 27th, 2010 earthquake which at 8.8 did quite a bit more damage to the building, and left large piles of bricks and rubble in the street below.

While you can no longer enter the Neo Gothic construction, which dates back to 1892, it is still an interesting place to visit, or at least walk by. On the Almirante Barroso side, you can see up in to the ceiling of the cupola, which is painted sky blue with gold accents. There are also often flowers left on the nearby fence. While you could probably get a closer look to the building, you'd be wise to keep your distance, as it's still quite unstable.
