NileGuide Expert tip:

Extend your knowledge and understanding of the coup and dictatorship in Santiago by checking out this important memorial site and former detention center.

Description:

Parque Por La Paz Villa Grimaldi is a block-square area that is a former country house that during the dictatorship was used as a detention and torture center. While it might not be a cheery way to spend an afternoon, it is tremendously educational, and if you take a tour with one of the volunteer guides, you will learn different information about the experience of the neighborhood (Peñalolén) and the detainees than you'll learn at the highly-regarded Museo de La Memoria in Quinta Normal.

The area consists of a series of memorials, a rose garden dedicated to the women who died here with a line from a poem by poet laureate Gabriela Mistral, a fountain, a wall of names of those who lost their lives here, and several buildings where some artifacts from the time period. It's an easy bus ride from downtown Santiago, and a peaceful place to spend a couple of hours.
