Colonial Zone
The colonial zone is an area that is inhabited by the vestiges of the European occupation of the island over the last 500 plus years. There are charming ruins at every corner, the architecture pulling distinctively on the Spanish, houses usually having the great doors giving directly onto the street, leading to a Spanish patio on the inside. Walking the streets, the colours of the buildings against the usually bright blue sky will give new meaning to contrast: the structures being painted a brilliant white, blue or turquoise, or their warm brick left bare free to be admired. The plaza Espana, where the Columbus house still stands is flanked by a street purely housed by some of the best restaurants of the city, where you can relish in a spectacular meal, overlooking the whole palm-framed plaza. The Isabella La Catolica church nearby is the oldest church in the new world and very interesting to visit, or just sit in front of it and watch the children run through the resident pigeon flock, making them all take flight, or watching the new brides having their wedding pictures taken in picturesque surroundings. For shopping, there is just to walk down the Conde, making sure to visit Helados Bon, the local cult ice cream chain, with flavours from dulce de leche to guava to tantalise your tastebuds while you cool down.Nightlife
