Gazcue

Gazcue is an older neighbourhood that used to be the hotspot to live back in the 50s.  The architecture is a mix of deco with old Spanish, the architects of the time having had all the possible resources at their disposal, designing large stately mansions as well as quirky buildings, some of them reminiscent of the jetsons.  The trees are large and give much needed shade to the streets lined with colmados, fruteros (fruit sales people), cocoteros (coconut sales people) restaurants (a few notable vegetarian ones, like Ananda) and little shops.  Walking through the streets is a pleasure you should give yourself, starting with the Malecon, going up to the Bolivar then wandering around the neighborhoods around the Presidential Palace.  A visit is definitely worthwhile is the Plaza de la Cultura with all it's museums and independent cinema.
