NileGuide Expert tip:

Getting married? Get in line early...

Description:

On weekends when the weather is warm, wedding parties pour out of Igreja Nossa Senhora do Brasil onto Av. Brasil, one of the city's busiest thoroughfares. The waiting list to get married here is so long, even Disney characters wanting to get hitched here would have to put off their fairytale endings until the sequels.

A simple glance reveals why traditionalists want to walk the aisle at this particular church. The baroque-style building, with two picturesque towers evoking Moscow's St. Basil's basilica, sits on a palm tree-lined plaza, mere minutes from Parque do Ibirapuera. Inside, the ceiling is painted as a reproduction of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.

Want to check out the church without crashing weddings? Daily mass is held Monday-Friday at 8 and 9 a.m., and 12:05, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, mass occurs at 8 and 9 a.m., noon and 4 p.m. On Sunday, mass happens at 8, 10 and 11 a.m., and 12:30, 5, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
