There isn't much out by the Hongqiao Airport in Shanghai, but this is expected to change thanks to the addition of a subway line that extends to the airport's front door. Now you can come and go with ease, and that makes experiencing the traffic and mob that was Hongqiao less necessary. However, within a few miles there are a few locations of interest. Art galleries, historical spots, hotels and restaurants.
The Elegant Art Gallery and Bei's Gallery provide the perfect opportunity to view high-quality art in the general Hongqiao area. You'll see some of Shanghai's local art on display as well as national examples of new wave art philosophies. The Arts & Crafts Research Institute is also in the area, making it a convenient nearby stop when exploring the area's art scene.
Hongqiao has several important historical religious sites both from Chines religious followings and Western religious carry overs from the period when foreign powers had concession zones throughout the city. The Longhua Temple and Pagoda are in the area as well as the Xujiahui Church better known as St. Ignatius Cathedral. Finally, the Hengshan Community Church is relatively close to these two establishments making it an impressively religious area.
Historical sites and former historical celebrity homes are also on offer near Hongqiao. The Song Qing Ling House is a prime example of this area's historical importance.
