Description:

The name might seem strange. But you need to know The Winery has an older sister, the Gazebo Wine Garden a few miles away in Elizabeth Bay.
This brash new sibling like this, right in the middle of urbane Surry Hills, has been long overdue; a grown up wine bar with over 50 available by the glass, with knowledgeable and attentive staff, quirky design elements, yet doesn't take itself too seriously. See what I mean by a wine list with categories like 'slurpables' and 'pink bits' and a decor that includes life-size storks in construction hats and mounted deer heads strangled by strangled by light bulbs and crosses.
Inside, there are numerous levels to linger at or lounge in; huge arched leather booths and private rooms, even an al fresco terrace with zebra-print cushions.
Each day has it's own theme; Monday is French with Steak Frites; Tuesday is pie and pinot, wine tastings on Wednesdays; right through to Sunday roast with giant chess in the laneway (my favourite) when jugs of Pimms or sangrias set you back only $15.
Food may not be the strong point here. But then again, it's a winery. We're here for the drinks. But it might be wise to book. Otherwise, take a chance that there could be room at the bar until a table becomes available. But please don't cut the grass (that's the grass growing on the bar). Seriously.
