Description:

Not to be confused with Firefly's tiny tapas bar in the city at Walsh Bay, this lower North Shore bar/diner is another addition to Neutral Bay's growing reputation as a 'go-to' precinct. And much bigger than it's sibling across the harbor.
You can't help but be impressed by the lofty heights of the spacious entrance, and the earthy design combination of stone cladding on the walls, massive exposed timber beams, wooden floors and bar top. Multiple pendant lights hang at different heights, like balloons suspended in flight.
I came for the wine. It's hard to miss; one entire wall is stacked with a supposed 2,000 bottles. Every continent has a big representation, including South America. More than 30 are available by the glass. This is appreciated as Ms Syd has come for the cocktails, leaving me solo on the vino. And staff is refreshingly knowledgeable; two different waiters served me and both impressed with their enological prowess.
It's seating at close quarters (both inside and at the pavement tables outside), it's loud and boisterous, but in a fun convivial way. More people arrive, see the crowds and move on with a look of disappointment. There is a no-booking policy in the evenings, so if you can't come early, be prepared to wait.
Food is for sharing at Firefly, but after my first bite of the six-hour port braised beef cheek, we had to order another; ditto the zucchini frites. It's that kind of place.
