In the 1950's conditions in this area deteriorated and rents fell, opening it up to artists and students. Today, the old warehouses are trendy studios and flats. The Biedermeier quarter of Spittelberg was saved from demolition and has been refurbished and Mariahilferstrasse transitioned into a thriving shopping area. Plentiful restaurants, bars and nightclubs give this area the most active nightlife in town.
