Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park

NileGuide Expert Says:

Many of the 18th and 19th century buildings lining the C&O Canal towpath in Georgtown are much as they were when they were built. The same holds for the natural scenery beyond Georgetown. This relaxing time capsule is beautiful year-round and is rarely discovered by visitors.

Description:

Starting in Georgetown, the C&O Canal begins low alongside 19th century brick and stone buildings. This is where mules once towed canal boats that carried passengers and freight as an alternative route to the treacherous Potomac River. Pick your favorite recreation along the 184.5-mile towpath, whether it's a leisurely stroll after lunch in Georgetown, smooth bike riding or jogging along the flat and level gravel tow path, energetic hikes around Great Falls, bouldering and rock climbing, or relaxing family picnicking. Camping, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, fishing, boating and canoeing opportunities are seasonably available in designated areas. Mule-towed canal boat rides run from April through October, boarding in Georgetown or Great Falls (Maryland side), $5 per visitor (children under three ride free). See website or call or schedule. Interpretive talks, group hikes and programs are planned throughout the year and private trail guides are available. Locals cherish the C&O Canal for its recreation versatility and accessibility. Weekends bustle with activity throughout the year while weekdays bring a serene getaway. Fall colors start in September and hang on through most of November. The region's diverse foliage sport warm browns to fiery reds and bright yellows. Many areas are accessible by the mobility impaired. The six visitor centers are located in: Georgetown DC Great Falls MD, Brunswick MD, Williamsport MD, Hancock MD, and Cumberland MD. No entry fee to enjoy the tow path in Georgetown, access to Great Falls National Park is $5 per private vehicle for a three day pass.
