NileGuide Expert tip:

Make sure to spend some time in the Interactive Discovery Center, which documents fascinating cases of meteorites making impact.

Description:

Around 50,000 years ago, an asteroid traveling at 26,000 miles per hour struck planet Earth. This is not the plot to the latest Hollywood summer blockbuster, but the story of Meteor Crater, located 35 miles east of Flagstaff on I-40. See the point of impact at this impressive crater site, which measures one mile across, 2.4 miles in circumference, and about 550 feet deep. Walk the observation trails, check out the indoor viewing  station, learn about the whole dramatic story by watching "Collisions and Impacts," playing at the wide screen movie theater, explore the interactive discovery center, and pick up a souvenir at the gift shop. The site is also home to Astronaut Memorial Park (NASA astronauts famously trained at Meteor Crater in preparation for the famous Apollo missions), as well as an RV park.
