Description:

Nestled on the shores of famous Lake Winnipesaukee, Wolfeboro is traditionally identified with sailing, swimming and other types of summer time fun. However, the Wolfeboro Cross Country Ski Association offers a nice cold weather option for outdoor enthusiasts. This all-volunteer organization maintains a network of cross country ski trails in neighboring Sewall Woods, an open space property owned by the town. Skiers first obtain passes at the association's shop on North Main Street (which has a good variety of quality skiing gear, by the way) and then follow clearly marked street signs to the Sewall Woods location. The trails are both regularly tracked and groomed, providing a consistently smooth glide for skiers. Another nice touch is the quality and abundance of its "easier" trails. At most ski centers, these trails are flat and uninteresting (most simply cross over level golf courses) – as if the safety rather than the recreational interests of beginner skiers was paramount. At Wolfeboro, however, these trails feature some nice dips and turns – the Criss Cross trail, in particular, offers a fun and manageable downward slide. Some advanced Nordic skiers may be less than impressed with the center's plainly treed landscape and the overall tameness of its trails (the advanced trails are not all that challenging). However, the association does an admirable job of keeping the trails in fine shape which often amounts to a pleasant afternoon jaunt into the winter woods.
