If you wish to beat the tour buses arriving at the Xpujil Archeological Zone from nearby Chicanna Ecovillage Resort, stay right across Highway 186 from the ruins at Cabanas Don Jorge. You can be the first in line when the site opens at 8:00 am. "Mr. George" rents out rooms in cabins situated behind his restaurant, the Cocina Economica Xpujil.The accommodations' quality fits the price: reasonably clean rooms that are nothing special cost only $10 each – certainly the least expensive option in the area. Don Jorge's is popular with backpackers and national travelers (one Mexican with a sense of humor commented that having the shower water streaming directly at the toilet could be helpful if you're in a hurry).
After visiting Xpujil, make sure to see the other Mayan ruins in the area including, Becan, Chicanna, Hormiguero, and Calakmul.
