Description:

Most travelers enjoy visiting public markets in Mexico's small towns – they are a good place to soak up the local color and find cheap eats. In Xpujil, the public market shops and restaurants line the road that heads south from Highway 186 toward the Mayan ruins at Hormiguero.

You will find the market road at the intersection where the statue of a Campechan woman in traditional dress stands. Fruit and vegetable stands abound. Pollos Asados Sury serves simple plates of grilled chicken, rice, beans, grilled onions, and salsa at outdoor plastic tables and chairs. Not for the faint of heart is a stop at the butcher shop where you might find a pig's head staring back at you.

The Public Market is close to Hotel La Victoria and is a convenient place to buy snacks on your way to such Mayan ruins as Xpujil, Becan, Chicanna, and Calakmul.
