Description:

Children love visiting Chicanná in southeastern Campeche because of its most gruesome feature: the enormous stone face of the sacred Earth Monster that is the entrance to Structure II. The monster's name is Itzamná – the Mayan god who created everything. The building's porch portrays Itzamná's sharp teeth and tongue. Look up and you will see his nose and crossed eyes, and from his ears dangle heavy earrings. It must have been a frightening experience to step across through Itzamná's mouth into Structure II's eight rooms, which once were painted brilliant colors, you can still see deep red paint in some places. Chicanná means "The house of the serpent's mouth, formed out of three Mayan words: chi (mouth), can (serpent), and ná (house). Visit Chicanná on a day trip that includes the ruins at Xpujil, Becán, and Hormiguero. The best stop for lunch is the restaurant at Chicanná EcoVillage Resort.
