Description:

For those looking for a museum that appears like the Museum of Natural History in New York or San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, you might pass by Zihuatanejo's archaeological musuem without a second glance.  A simple open air building with fading paint, it doesn't raise expectations but inside is an impressive collection of artifacts that trace Zihuatanejo's history for many centuries.  Hundreds of pieces of jewelry, bowls and plates, ceramics and other pieces from the daily lives of Zihuatanejo's early inhabitants.  Maps and documents trace back indigenous civilizations using finds from over 50 area archaeological sites to form a history leading up to the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th Century as well as Zihua's popularity with pirates all the way through the 18th Century.

Beyond the permanent display, the museum also sponsors special exhibits and cultural events, especially around Mexican holidays.  Notices are posted outside the entrance with upcoming events.
