Join a group tour of the historic Canterbury Shaker Village to experience 200 years of the Shaker way of life. Visit the historic mansion nicknamed “Castle in the Clouds” with panoramic views of Lake Winnipesaukee, the crown jewel of the region. Hop on a historic train ride and meander around this breathtaking lake with stops along the five public beaches in the area including Weirs Beach where Kellerhaus, the oldest candy shop in New Hampshire, is located. While you're at it go to Winnipesaukee pier right on the Weir's beach boardwalk and participate in the multitude of activities the area offers. Include in your itinerary Mt. Chocorua and Madison Boulder Natural area. Chocurua is woven in legend and blanketed with views of the Presidential and Mt. Washington ranges. Madison Boulder boasts the largest granite rock leftover from the ice age. It's an impressive natural landmark. Never heard of Laconia before? Perhaps it will stay etched in your mind forever once you visit Belknap Mill, the oldest unaltered brick textile mill in the nation. The mill often called the “official meetinghouse of New Hampshire” is on the National Register of Historic places. Dust off your leather chaps to participate or just be a spectator at Laconia's annual motorcycle week. If motorsports strike your fancy visit the NH Motor Speedway races in Loudon. The lakes region is also home to America's first summer resort built in 1763 by Governor Wentworth in Wolfeboro. Movie buffs should visit Squam Lake in Holderness where “On Golden Pond” was filmed and take advantage of the natural spring-fed waters. While you're there don't miss the Squam Lake natural science center.
