  • The seaside town of Amalfi is the heart and soul of the beautiful Amalfi Coast. Once home to the thriving maritime Republic of Amalfi in the Middle Ages, you can see the former wealth and power of Amalfi in its impressive Duomo dedicated to Sant' Andrea (St. Andrew). Visit the Museo Civico where you can learn about the town's history and important events, and peek into the Arsenale where the trading ships for the Republic of Amalfi were built in Middle Ages.

Amalfi has an important tradition of papermaking dating back to the 13th century, and the town is thought to be one of the first places that paper was made in Europe. Set at the base of a river valley, Amalfi was an ideal location for paper mills, the ruins of which can be seen by hiking up into the beautiful and peaceful Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills). You can learn more about the history of papermaking in Amalfi at the Museo della Carta (Paper Museum), which is located in the ruins of an historic mill.

Amalfi is famous for its beaches, and certainly one of the top things to do is enjoy a moment of relaxation soaking up the warm Mediterranean sun. Marina Grande is Amalfi's most popular and largest beach, and the best spot for the true Amalfi beach experience. If you're looking for a quieter spot, visit the Le Sirene beach behind the port in Amalfi or take a boat to the secluded Santa Croce beach west of Amalfi.

With quaint shops, winding streets and gorgeous beaches, Amalfi is an ideal destination for experiencing the best of the Amalfi Coast.
