  • Something as familiar as going to the movies can be turned into a cultural experience when you go to one of our top ten Athens cinemas. Movies have played a key role in entertaining Athenians for most of the last century and Greece has a small but growing movie making industry of her own. The most popular choices at the box office, however, are the big Hollywood blockbusters which are subtitled in Greek.

Our number one cinema is the stately Attikon which might not offer a lot in variety but makes up for it in class and nostalgia. We love their high standards in screening, usually preferring more arty, international features. The chandelier, velvet curtains, and mid-movie intermission for refills at the bar all add luster to the evening. The Attikon is a purely winter location, however, and during the summer closes up as it knows that no on in their right mind spends a single evening of the perfect Athenian summer indoors. Hence our rankings from numbers two through seven going to our favorite outdoor cinemas, the most exceptional being Aigli Village Cool for its setting in the National Gardens and Cine Paris for its view of the Acropolis just beyond the silver screen. Cine Psiri is connected to the excellent Kouzina-Cine Psirri restaurant for a one-stop date night.

For more modern movie theaters, Star City offers top-notch quality in sound, screen, and popcorn, and is five minutes from the city center. Village center Maroussi offers the same to residents of the north as does Faliro Village 9 to the suburbs of the south, but we prefer the latter for its proximity to the coastal Olympic venues and Faliro Marina, making for a lovely harbor-side stroll after the show.
