  • The area around the Panathenaic Stadium is comprised of modern apartment buildings, embassies, homes of old, established Greek families and excellent restaurants such as Spondi and Alatsi. The top hotels in this area include some of the best in the city, such as the Grande Bretagne, but also lesser known hideaways like the Athens Green Apartments where visitors can pretend to be Athenians during the stay. For this top ten list we looked for hotels that have an excellent reputation in service and friendliness, are well connected to the rest of Athens whether walking distance or via metro, and are within two miles of the Stadium where the first Modern Olympic Games took place in 1896.

    Our first choice is the Hilton. This comfortable five star hotel holds a special place in the heart of Americans; combined with being quite near to the American embassy, the entire surrounding neighborhood has been nicknamed "Little America." The Galaxy rooftop bar as well as Milo's restaurant are both included in our top ten bars and restaurants, respectively. The Royal Olympic Hotel is another of the city's five star hotels. Where it might not meet the five star standard of hotels elsewhere in Europe, it has a killer view of the remaining Corinthian columns of the Temple of Zeus, is a five minute walk from the Acropolis neighborhood of Koukaki and Makriyianni as well as two metro stations: Syngrou-Fix and Acropolis. Business persons will enjoy the stately work center and anyone will enjoy the rooftop garden and restaurant.

    In proximity to the stadium, you can't get closer than Athens Green Apartments, an ideal choice for anyone looking to get a more "local" experience who intend on staying for a while. If it's just space that you're looking for, we love the Ava hotel in Plaka, renovated over the 2011 winter and highly regarded by most every travel guide. A solid option for those wanting something simple is the Amalia hotel. Need something even cheaper? While the Athens International Hostel is not far from the stadium, we prefer Athens Backpackers. It's better connected to the rest of the city as well as having a real personality. Facilities like laundry, bicycle rental, and convenience stores are all close at hand.
