  • For Copenhagen's young and happening set, Vesterbro is where it's at after dark. This part of the Danish capital has always had a reputation for somewhat loose living and, the red light district immediately around the Central Train Station having been cleaned up considerably, previously notorious streets like Istegade as well as former industrial complexes like meat-packing district Kødbyen are bursting with life and culture.

Former trade union hall Vega, at the far end of Vesterbro, is one of Copenhagen's premiere nightclubs and venues for small as well as bigger visiting rock and pop bands. Around the corner are a number of great, neighborhood cocktails bars with live DJs at weekends; the vibe at Darling is almost block party while newcomer Brass Monkey is Copenhagen's first tiki bar.

Many of Vesterbro's cafes transform into lively cocktail bars on weekend nights, and the most popular of these is Bang & Jensen, found in a former apothecary on Istegade: While alternative, basement bars like Märkbar and nearby Riesen lend the quarter a 'Berlin' feel after dark.

The old meat-packing district of Kødbyen's recent transformation into cultural quarter has meant the arrival of some of Copenhagen's most happening bars and clubs, among them Jolene, Mesteren & Lærlingen, and Karriere Bar.

For those looking for more culture, Vesterbro has its share of theater stages. In addition to the quarter's alternative, independent cinema, Vester Vov Vov-that sometimes shows Danish films with subtitles-there is also a theater, Det Ny Teater, with a specialty for lavish musical shows like Mary Poppins. At the far edge of Vesterbro in the newly-developed Carlsberg Byen is Northern Europe's largest center for contemporary dance, DANSEhallerne.
