Five-star dining in Lisbon
Eating out in Lisbon is to wine and dine in one of Europe's most attractive capital cities. And if haute cuisine is your scene, you'll need to know where the best upscale eateries are located. To help you book a table and sample the best gastronomy in town, here is our top 10 list of five-star restaurants, each one a memorable fine-dining venue.
For the ultimate gourmet experience, secure a table in advance at Tavares Rico. This is currently the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Lisbon. It's also the city's oldest, dating from the late 18th century. The gastronomy is traditional Portuguese, re-interpreted to lend it a modern twist. The culinary experience is further heightened by the opulent and classical interior. At the other end of the spectrum is Eleven, a stylish and contemporary venue that serves modern Mediterranean cuisine that has one of the most comprehensive wine cellars in Lisbon. The progressive ambiance is also apparent at places like Manifesto, with its vivid in-your-face interior design and daring menu, and stylish Bica do Sapato, a fashionable riverfront restaurant that's part-owned by American actor John Malkovich. A number of high-end city restaurants have been created out of the shell of existing historic buildings. Two of them, Largo and Faz Gostos Lx, have been carefully built within the ruins of convent buildings. Both offer a menu of international cuisine. Another, Kais, is housed within a former dockside warehouse and the industrial look is almost Gothic in its effect. Lisbon's restaurant scene is wholly appetising in its scope and nationality. For example, Gemelli, with its gourmet Italian menu, is one of the best of its kind in the capital. Out of the city centre, Estoril Mandarin is celebrated as the best Chinese restaurant in Portugal! Hotel restaurants shouldn't be overlooked. There are several excellent choices such as Valle Flôr at Pestana Palace and Veranda at Four Seasons Hotel Ritz. But we've highlighted Open at Inspira Santa Marta for its commendable environmental policy and, whenever possible, use of biological produce. Space doesn't permit listing other noteworthy restaurants, places like Alma, Tágide, Mezzaluna and 100 Maneiras. And new venues are opening all the time, such as the recently inaugurated Darwin's Cafe. So, watch this space!
This is your inner foodie speaking. I'm hungry. And the five-star restaurants of Lisbon are calling, with their lust-worthy aromas, clinking wine glasses and dazzling denizens. After all this sight-seeing, you deserve a little four-course indulgence. So do something nice for me, you and your salivating palate, and book a table at these first-class restaurants.
