Los Angeles is the home of the original McDonalds and is the original ground zero for the whole 50's car culture fast food phenomena, a trend that transformed so much of the American landscape. Nowadays there continues to be a lot of great food that you can get in a hurry here in Los Angeles, including burger joints, cafeterias and small take-out restaurants. Street food deserves a special mention. . . you could eat only from curb-side food trucks and still be living large!
Apple Pan is as classic a burger joint as you will ever find. The burgers are good and the ambience at this timeless burger counter is grand. I really love details like the paper cone and metal cone holder you get with a soda. . .
Grand Central Market is a downtown food court that is overfilled with character and great food stalls. It's a a great place to get a feel for downtown L.A. and some affordable food. Right across the street is the Angels' Flight where you can take the train ride up to Grand Avenue and the cultural scene there for a quarter. Also downtown at the street-side edge of Olvera Street is Cielito Lindo's, famous for their taquitos with guacamole sauce.
Other famous (and good!) fast food joints farther west include Pink's, serving fabulous hot dogs since 1939, and Tito's Tacos, from 1959. Both these classic places still draw crowds on a daily basis.
From here on out this list falls into frenzy of tacos and burgers, of which there is so much to brag about in Los Angeles! But lest you forget, the street food scene in Los Angeles goes far beyond this and extends so wide, including everything from the pupusa truck down the street to wildly successful Kogi Taco trucks to the weekend food stands at the Wat Thai Temple. . . .
