San Felipe, Yucatan

Description:

  • San Felipe, located on the Yucatán Peninsula's north coast, will charm you with its tin-roofed, wooden houses, gaily painted in sun-drenched colors. It's the kind of seaport where families gather on their front steps at the end of the day, sunburned fishermen watching their daughters riding pink bicycles and son playing soccer in the deserted streets. Eleven kilometers from Río Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, San Felipe offers boat tours of the reserves, fishing excursions and a beautiful boardwalk to stroll along. Visit on February 5 for the feast of San Felipe or August 1-5 to honor Santo Domingo. Stay at Hotel San Felipe de Jesús with its harbor views or rent a thatch-roofed hut from Sergio Carillo Correa, a one-man welcome wagon with taxi service, Internet café and billiard parlor. The curiously named El Popular Vaselina Restaurant is the place to eat – Kiko is also a good choice.
