So Much In SoMa

Description:

San Francisco's SoMa, a neighborhood where -- not too long ago -- most tourists feared to tread, is now one of the most rapidly developing parts of the city. Home to a world-class ball park and acclaimed art collections, this is the perfect place to satisfy art critics, sports nuts, and foodies, alike.

Day Note:

Barry may be gone, but the view from AT&T Park is still a winner. Don't want to shell out for a seat? Then think about the standing room-only tickets. There's so much to see and do in the park, that a seat will just get in your way. Wet your whistle at the 21st Amendment, and head to your posh room at the W Hotel.

    Our Local Expert Says:

If you don’t fill up during the game, head out to one of SoMA’s great nearby eateries: Tres Agaves boasts wonderful haute Mexican food and top-shelf tequilas; Primo Patio serves up a delicious islands-inspired lunch menu; and South Park Café features refined yet unpretentious French cooking.

    Description:

Baseball lovers would be remiss not to catch an open-air game at AT&T Park, home to MLB powerhouse the San Francisco Giants and the record-breaking feats of Barry Bonds. Built in 1997, AT&T Park is positioned on the bay in San Francisco's funky SoMA district and appeals even to fair-weather sports fans with its fantastic setting, beautiful views, and fun features, such as the 80-foot Coca-Cola bottle with playground slides. And then there's the matter of the park's top-notch eats. Where else in America could you expect to buy a gourmet sausage and garlic fries or a sushi roll for your mid-game snack?

    Description:

Let it be said that 21st Amendment has good food, reasonable prices and a generally friendly atmosphere. However, it must also be said, that the service in this SOMA joint is absolutely as slow as Moses using a walker. Stop by here if you like, get a cocktail and chill with your buds. But just be certain you are not on any kind of schedule, since it will take literally forever to get served any kind of food. Specialities include the classic '21 A Burgers' that are made with Niman Ranch beef and served with hearty fries. In short, 21st Amendment is the right spot for an after-work drink, a satisfying lunch or cozy dinner, so long as you are not on the clock.

    Description:

Starwood Hotels & Resorts' 31-story property is as modern and hip as its fashionable clientele. Sophisticated, slick, and stylish, it suits its neighbors, which include the Museum of Modern Art, the Moscone Center, and the Metreon entertainment center. The striking gray granite facade, piped with polished black stone, complements the octagonal three-story glass entrance and lobby. The hip, urban style extends to the guest rooms, which have a residential feel. Each contains a feather bed with a goose-down comforter and pillows, Waterworks linens, an oversize dark-wood desk, an upholstered chaise longue, and louvered blinds that open to (usually) great city views. Each room also contains a compact media wall complete with a Sony CD/DVD player, an extensive CD library, and a 27-inch color TV with optional high-speed Internet service (and an infrared keyboard) at $15 per day. Bathrooms are super-sleek and stocked with Bliss products. Furthering the cool vibe is a bi-level XYZ bar and restaurant, which serves wonderful Californian cuisine within a beautiful modern interior. In 2005, the W welcomed a 5,000-square-foot outpost of NYC's Bliss Spa to the premises. All in all, this is one of...

    Description:

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, or SF MoMA, boasts world-class international art installations and is a unique architectural marvel in and of itself. Past special exhibits have included Matthew Barney, Frida Kahlo, Diane Arbus, Claes Oldenburg, and Marc Chagall, just to give you a taste of SF MoMA's diverse coverage of modern and contemporary art-world darlings. The permanent collections are nothing to shake a stick at, either. The painting wing features an array of modern masters, from Magritte to Pollock, and the photography, architecture and design, and media arts wings are full of visual delights. The top floor features awe-inspiring full-room installations (and we really mean FULL room) that are better left experienced rather than spoiled here. SF MoMA also has one of the best gift shops in San Fran. If you feel petered out after wandering through the museum, catch a flick at the SF Metreon entertainment complex, only a block away.

    Description:

Co-owned by musician Boz Scaggs, this glitzy restaurant and bar serves California cuisine and seats 200, but it's usually standing room only during almost nightly shows ranging from performers of homegrown rock, jazz, blues, and alternative music. An added bonus for the musically inclined family: All ages are always welcome. Call or check their website for a schedule; hot bands sell out in advance.
