- Santiago is not terribly unaffordable, but can be punishing to the cheapie budget you may have expected in South America. But there's no need to go ultra-budget and compromise cleanliness, comfort or safety while you're in the capital city. You can stay hassle-free at these hotels and still have enough money left over for some pisco sours at the local watering hole. Cheaper sleeps tend to cluster around Bellavista, Barrio Brasil and downtown, bthough if a hostel isn't out of the question, you can fare alright on the budget front up in Providencia, though on the west (downtown) side.
