  • From the ultramodern malls that may put your home mall to hsame, to street vendors and quirky handicraft stalls attended by theironwers to hard-to-find antiques and even a giant fleamarket, Santiago has its fair share of places to shop till you drop. At the malls, you'll see local and imported brands of shoes, clothes, purses etc., normally at prices equal to or greater than what you'd pay at home. Still, it's fun to see what's in fashion in Chile or what kind of interesting kitchen implements you can find (like a stove top toaster, perhaps?). In terms of handicrafts, Chile is known for enameled copper, carved wooden bowls, terra cotta items, woven and knitted woolens and of course, the speckled, beautiful lapis lazuli stone, found only here and in Afghanistan. At hte antiques and flea markets, you'll notice that nearly everything cna have a second (or third) useful life, and you can find nearly anything you can imagine, from tools to old enameled ladels to washing machine parts and used books. Speaking of books, you should also check out some of the music and bookstores while you're in town, as it will help you to brush oup on your Spanish. And of course, you'll want some wine to drink while you're reading and listening to absorb Chilean culture. Several wine stores, and even the supermarket will not dissapoint.
