Many people flock to Vancouver for Japanese food because the city has built a reputation of the stellar cuisine and it certainly helps that we have fresh seafood within arms reach. There are about as many sushi joints in Vancouver, as there are coffee shops, and if you've been to the city you know that's a lot. There's good sushi and then there's bad sushi and the bad sushi can usually be found pre-made in many grocery stores. Avoid this at all costs and take advantage of one of the many fabulous Japanese restaurants in Vancouver.
Kingyo Izakaya is number one for many reasons. First off, the food is always a hit and the menu changes all the time, which is great because you will never get bored. They focus on Izakaya which is small plates and ideal for sharing with friends. The atmosphere, staff and location are all ideal ingredients to create a delicious night.
Miku has a cult following and the Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi is a must try! It's chic atmosphere and fashionable crowd make this a perfect date spot, or a place that will impress your clients. It's West Hastings location is great for downtown luncheons and evening dates.
Hapa Izakaya is also a modern Japanese tapas house and they have a few locations around the city. Much like Kingyo, their menu changes and the food is always fresh and delicious.
If you're into Japanese cuisine, chances are you have heard of Tojo. Tojo's is a very high end restaurant and it's claim to fame is that Tojo himself invented the California Roll. There are many budget friendly Japanese and sushi restaurants around the city, and Tojo's is not one of them. But, if you're looking to impress your guests, this is the spot to take them.
Not mentioned is Blue Water Cafe, but they certainly deserve a shout out. Their seafood/sushi bar is excellent and it's a great venue if you want high end West Coast/French cuisine and the option of sushi. Blue Water will really wow your guests, and your palate.
