Birmingham Attractions

A trip to Birmingham, Alabama would not be complete without checking out the famous attractions Downtown. Explore the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and learn about great Jazz artists with ties to Alabama. Located in the historic Carver Theater on Fourth Avenue North, this Art Deco museum not only provides an in-depth exhibition of famous Jazz musicians it also offers tuition-free Jazz education to low-income students in the area. While you are in the mindset of Birmingham history be sure to stop by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to learn about Birmingham’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Not only will you be able to learn about the Civil Rights era through various multimedia presentations and through their extensive research library of primary sources, but you’ll also be to get an understanding of how the African-American struggle for equality relates to other human rights struggles around the world. If you are spending most of your day at the Institute you should take a stroll to Kelly Ingram Park and the 16th Street Baptist Church. Both are historical landmarks and real-life memorials celebrating the achievements of the Civil Rights Movement.

For an exciting adventure the whole family will enjoy plan to check out a few of Birmingham’s more kid-friendly attractions. Because Downtown is where it’s at, you should stop by the McWane Science Center for some interactive science fun! All permanent and temporary exhibits celebrate science and wonder—from an amazing collection of dinosaurs to an awe-inspiring aquarium. After visiting the science center check out The Birmingham Zoo in Mountain Brook, just outside Birmingham. Animal fun for all ages, the zoo is one of the coolest spots for everyone to enjoy. At the new interactive Predator Zone you’ll be able to watch zookeepers conduct training sessions with the big cats, aka Lions. If the Predator Zone didn’t scare you away buy tickets to the Zoolight Safari for a winter celebration of lights and ride the Jingle Bell Carousel, Santa’s Rock’n Roll Racers, or the Winter Trail Hayride. Note that all of the Zoo’s animal exhibits are closed during Zoolight Safari.
