Bridgetown Attractions

The first thing any visitor to Barbados will notice is the abundance of natural beauty and seemingly endless white sand beaches, the most famous of which is Crane Beach, rated "one of the ten best beaches in the world" by Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. All beaches in Barbados are open to the public and surfing to SCUBA diving are popular activities here.

SCUBA diving in Barbados is ideal year-round with an average water temperature of 80°F and visibility from 40 to 70 feet. Reef diving is available around the island within two miles from shore; wreck diving is plentiful with over 200 wrecks in Carlisle Bay alone.

Explore Barbados at your leisure by renting a car or by taking an island safari tour which can include viewing, feeding, and possibly even swimming with leatherback and hawksbill turtles. If you choose to drive yourself, don't miss making a visit to Sam Lord's Castle, Speightstown, Sir Frank Huston Sugar Museum, Gun Hill Signal Station, the Barbados Museum, and Sunbury Plantation House.

Regular matches of cricket, the national sport of Barbados, can be seen regularly at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. Polo is another well-loved British sport with four polo fields located throughout the island. After an afternoon match, enjoy a relaxing sunset catamaran cruise or party hard with the pirates onboard the Jolly Roger Pirate Cruise (currently undergoing a complete refurbishment).

If you're looking to explore nature, don't miss Welchman Hall Gully with it's beautiful foliage and natural rock formations. Harrison's Cave is a stunning limestone cavern filled with crystals, stalactites and stalagmites; don your hardhat, climb aboard the trolley and journey down into the center of the earth for an experience in beauty you'll soon not forget.

Duty-free shopping is another experience in Barbados not-to-be-missed. With bargains available for purchasing liquor, tobacco, electronics, perfume, jewelry, as well as china and crystal, visitors can save up to 50% over purchasing items at home. The main shopping area is the capital city of Bridgetown with other shops located at Bayshore Complex and Pelican Village on the outskirts of Bridgetown.

Also look for local Barbadian items to purchase like crafts, straw bags, artwork, and of course, Barbadian rum cake; you can also take a tour of the Mount Gay Rum factory, home to the 'world's oldest rum.'
