Biking in Calgary

Calgary has lots of bike riding trails. If you want a simple, leisurely ride, there are plenty of areas for that. If you want to try something extreme, you can do that here, too. Biking in Calgary is mostly of mountain bikers. The trails and areas around town are forested and rooted. But, there are paved trails and even a speedway for bikers in Calgary, too.

A new sport that's really gained popularity in Whistler, but has moved over to Calgary, now, is downhill biking. During the summer, Canada Olympic Park uses its ski lifts to transport bikers to the top of the hill so that they can ride down the hill over all sorts of obstacles. These tracks are becoming increasingly popular in Calgary, and COP is the only place in town for it.

Fish Creek, Nose Hill, and the River pathway system have lots of paved and gravel paths. These parks offer terrain for any level of biker, just depends how adventurous you feel. Griffith Woods, Edworthy, and Bowness are all river-side parks with bike trails, and the river pathway connects many parks such as these. A bike trail around the Glenmore Reservoir is a local favorite. This 16km paved trail takes under an hour to bike around, and offers great views of the city and the mountains.

The Glenmore Velodrome is Calgary's high speed bike track. This is the sort of facility used for Olympic training and high speed pedal biking. Weather permitting, this track is used by the Calgary Bike rack League, but the track is open for the public and new-comers.
