Q Bar was catering to Saigon's upwardly mobile set long before it was recognized as a bona fide emerging Asian metropolis. Yet despite no longer being the only show in town, this labyrinthine venue beneath the city's Opera House remains one of the bars others are measured by. Its location certainly sets it apart. The outdoor terrace looks onto Lam Son Square, but the punters (largely gay) are usually too busy checking each other out to pay much heed to the action outside. Inside, the various alcoves are usually packed out with dancers, groups and, frequently, with canoodling couples. The music policy varies but the vibe is distinctly mellower than at the full on Vietnamese clubs with ear-splitting techno giving way to less uncompromising beats. If you can't be bothered going underground, the terrace is a fine place to enjoy an expensive drink or two before continuing the night somewhere else.
