  • Puerto Madryn History

Madryn was one of several Welsh colonies (including also Gaiman, Trelew, Rawson, and Trevelin) in Argentine Patagonia founded in mid 19th century. There was an economic boom in 1886 when the Patagonian Railroad was introduced, spurring Madryn's port activities as well as fishing and salt industries.

Argentina's largest aluminum plant was constructed here in the 1970s, helping further develop an already solid economy. Then, when the Peso was devalued in the 90s, Madryn experienced another economic boom as international tourism developed around diving, fishing, and marine wildlife viewing.
